Guest Speaker Anita Hill, March 13, 2012

The Canada-U.S. Institute is delighted to welcome Professor of Social Policy, Law, and Women’s Studies at Brandeis University, Anita Hill as the third guest of the Canada-U.S. Institute Visiting Fellows Program. Anita Hill is the author of numerous articles on international commercial law, bankruptcy, and civil rights.She has written her biography, Speaking Truth to Power, and was the co-editor with Professor Emma Coleman Jordan of Race, Gender and Power in America: The Legacy of the Hill-Thomas Hearings. Her latest book is Reimagining Equality: Stories of Gender, Race, and Finding Home. Anita Hill has given numerous presentations on commercial law as well as race and gender equality. In addition, she has appeared on several television programs, such as Face the Nation and Meet the Press, and her commentary has been published by Newsweek, the New York Times, and the Boston Globe. Guest Speaker Stephen Clarkson, November 24, 2011

Dr. Stephen Clarkson, Professor of Political Economy at the University of Toronto, and a recent recipient of the Order of Canada, will be giving a lecture "Important to the United States but Impotent in Washington? How Canada and Mexico Construct US Power." Stephen Clarkson is a renowned Canadian political scientist and the author of several books, most recently, Dependent America? How Canada and Mexico Construct US Power (Toronto: U of T Press & Washington: Woodrow Wilson Press, 2011). Thursday, November 24, 12:30-2:00pm, SSC 4255.  A light lunch will be provided. Institute to Host Journalist David Frum

The Canada-U.S. Institute is honored to welcome renowned journalist, author, and former special assistant to President George W. Bush, David Frum to Western as the second guest of the CUSI Visiting Fellows Program in September. Mr. Frum will deliver a lecture titled “The Unhappy Giant: U.S.- Canada Relations in the Great Recession” on Tuesday, September 20, 2011, 5:00pm, North Campus Building, 101. David Frum is the editor of FrumForum.com, and the author of several New York Times bestsellers.

Don Abelson Participates in International Conferences

On May 12th, 2011 Don Abelson was interviewed by L'Observatoire Français des Think Tanks in Paris on the role and influence of think tanks in the United States.  His videotaped remarks were used as an introduction to  a conference entitled, “ à un an des présidentielles, quelle est la place des Think Tanks dans le débat public, en France et aux Etats-Unis?”.  The conference took place at Sciences Po.

On May 15th, 2011, Don gave a presentation to the Israel Democracy Institute (IDI), a Jerusalem-based think tank at its International Conference entitled, “What Do Think Tanks Do?”  His talk, “Think Again:  How American Think Tanks Compete in the Marketplace of Ideas,” was streamed live and is available on the IDI’s website – www.idi.org.il

On May 18th, Don gave a presentation to the Israeli Institute for Regional Foreign Policies in Tel Aviv.  The presentation entitled, “Can the American Think Tank Experience be imported to Israel?” was sponsored by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung.

"Taking Stock of a Turbulent Decade and Looking Ahead: Immigration to North America 2000-2010", April 28-30, 2011 

The University of Western Ontario's Centre for Research on Migration and Ethnic Relations in partnership with the Canada-U.S. Institute and with the generous support of the U.S. Consulate General, Toronto, is hosting the conference "Taking Stock of a Turbulent Decade and Looking Ahead: Immigration to North America 2000-2010" April 28-30, 2011, at the Ivey Spencer Leadership Centre.

This will be the first in a series of conferences hosted by the Western Centre for Research on Migration and Ethnic Relations as part of their Western Migration Conference Series. This is an interdisciplinary event with Canadian and American expert panelists speaking on five related themes, poster presentations showcasing recent findings in the area, and two keynote addresses sponsored by the Harold Crabtree Foundation Award in Public Policy.

Ralph Nader to Visit Western March 15, 2011

The Institute is honored to welcome lawyer, consumer advocate, and former U.S. Presidential candidate Ralph Nader as its first Visiting Fellow in March, 2011. Mr. Nader will be taking part in a press conference and giving a lecture titled "Canadian Independence: Salvation or Sacrifice to Canada-U.S. Relations". March 15, 2011, 5:15pm, NS 145. A book sale and signing will follow the talk in NS 7.
